Bleeding stupid

Upon our return to an extremely cold house after the holidays, Fliss noticed our radiators were a bit hit and miss. Some of them were hot-ish, others were just warm, so she suggested I call British Gas to get them to come out and look at it.

So last night I get through to a call center and when I explain to the guy what I want he says “Did you know you can bleed and balance your radiators by yourself?”

“Yes, I do know that.” I replied, “but I don’t pay around £200 a year for a servicing contract with British Gas in order to bleed and balance my own radiators.”

“But you will be able to tend to it quicker than we can send an engineer out, so I could talk you through the process if you would like.” Came the response.

“Look, I pay for the luxury of not having to service my own central heating system. I want you to send out an engineer.”

“When can I send an engineer out, sir? Is Monday okay?”

What strikes me as amazing is why British Gas would even have this stance with a customer who pays for their engineering cover. I mean, what if I screwed up the radiators entirely? What if it meant parts of the central heating system had to be replaced? Would I still be covered by the insurance after I’d tinkered with it myself upon the advice of a guy with a checklist in India?

It’s one of the stupidest responses I’ve ever gotten from a call center call, it really is.

719 Miles later

Being back after a near two-week holiday doesn’t actually feel so bad – possibly because it was such an enjoyable, yet exhausting break. So it’s nice to be back in familiar surroundings, plus I had Thursday off work so I could relax a little before getting back to the grind.

I’d like to say a big thankyou to everyone who put us up, fed us, and entertained us over the festive period. In 2007 we’ve been up in Scotland fairly frequently, but I don’t see that continuing in 2008, so it was good to celebrate the close of the year in style with so many friends and family.

If you’re at all interested, here’s a quick recap of what we got up to, as best as I can remember things…

It’s freezing cold. Time to head north.

I just cannot believe how cold it is today. Absolutely head hurting cold.

I have been out of the house twice – once in the morning to take Fliss to the station and Elisha to nursery, and again later in the afternoon when I went to collect some parcels. On the second jaunt I was shivering in the car until the heater got going, despite the fact I had a stout jacket on and a scarf, too.

My fingers were so withered from the cold that my ring kept falling off – I lost it under the passenger seat when I went to change gear on the way, and it fell off again when I threw the parcels into the boot. When I got back home again I sat huddled up in the computer room with the heater on, surfing the net and playing some multiplayer WipEout Pulse to take my mind off of it.

I’ve just stuck the central heating on, though. I figure that if we’re to be in Scotland for the next week or so then it’ll be off, so running it at full tilt now isn’t going to break the bank.

Unfortunately, just as I’m getting warm now, I have to head out to get Elisha from nursery. So as soon as I wolf down this here Hot Pocket and cup of coffee I’ll be out braving the elements once more. Man, I really was born into the wrong climate – I hate being cold and wet for two thirds of the year. Or three quarters of the year, if 2007 was anything to go by.
